Mrauk Oo

Mrauk Oo is situated about 80 km North of Sittwe on the river bank of Kispanadi (Kalandan) River it takes about 2½ hrs boat trip from Sittwe to Mrauk U. The capital of Dannyawady was built generations of Rakhine King’s their palace pagoda and ruled over the people. Rakhine King Min Saw was built in 792 Myanmar Era. Ancient city of Rakhine Kingdom is known for its old temples with wall paintings of India cultural influence. You can seen there many of ancient temples of Mrauk Oo. Maharmuni Pagoda, Shitthaung Temple, Dukkanthein Temple, Andawthein Temple, Lemyathna Temple, Sakyamanaung Pagoda, Koethaung Pagoda, the palace site and Rakine Museum.
 


Shitthaung Temple

Shitthaung Temple stands on a promontory half way up to the west side of a hilllock named PhoKhaung Taung (Mountain). King Minbargyi built Shitthaung Temple. He is the most powerful King of the Maruk Oo Dynasty. Record of history inscription he was also called as Minbin and reigned Rakhine from 1531 to 1553 A.D. The King built this remarkable temple in 1535 A.D after the successful defence against the Portuguese attack on the City of Mrauk Oo. Shitthaung temple had been built by one thousand architects and worker for a year. Shitthaung Temple means eighty thousand Pagodas.


Andawthein Temple

Andaw Thein or Temple of the Holy Molar Relic stands about 90 ft north of the Shitthaung Temple. Anndawthein Temple was originally built by Min Hla Raza in 1521 A.D. King of Mrauk Oo Minrazargyi, rebuilt it in 1596 A.D. The temple has an octagonal design. The main stupa, about forty feet high, surrounded by eight smaller ones, is on the upper platform. The central tower of the shrine contains the tooth-relic of Buddha, which is said to have been obtained from Sri Lanka by King Minbin (1534-1542 AD).
 


Dukkhanthein Pagoda

Dukkhanthein Pagoda was built by King Minphalaung in 1517 A.D. The temple stands on a hill, 30 feet high, having a flat surface like that of a drum. The reason was that the country was in the state of turmoil and governors and high officials were going to revolt against the king. The temple was built to prevent the fall of the old city by fulfilling a saying common at that time: when a house is worn, support it with a pole; when the city is worn, support its ceiling. The ordination hall is surmounted by a pagoda and surrounded by four smaller ones at each corner. The form of the pagoda is like that of the Shitthaung Temple.
 


Lemyethna Temple

Lemyethna or "the fourfacaded pagoda" was built by King Minsawmon, the first king of Mrauk Oo Dynasty, in 1430 A.D. It is one of the five pagodas built at the beginning of the establishment of the City. It is a solid structure with four vaulted portal surmounted by a solid stupa. The vaulted passages protrude each cardinal point and lead to the octagonal inner chamber encircled by niches which one contained seated Buddha images.

 


Sakyamanaung Pagoda

Sakyamanaung pagoda is situated a half mile noth-east of the palace-site, some distance away to the south of the Ratanamanaung Pagoda. It was built in 1629 A.D by the King Thirithudhammaraza who reigned in Mrauk Oo in the years between 1622 and 1638 A.D. This Pagoda is known to be one of the five most revered pagodas in Mrauk U. The five revered "Man" pagodas of Mrauk U are Lawka Man Aung, Zeenat Man Aung, Sakkya Man Aung, Mingalar Man Aung and Yadanar Man Aung. The pagoda was named after the Sakkyar dynasty. There are two statues of Orges guarding the pagoda. The sculptural arts of these two images are of rare artists. Also there are two statues of Nats, paying respect to Buddha.
The pagoda was built with stones instead of bricks. The architecture of the pagoda is in the form of lotus flower. There are 12 small pagodas surrounding the main Sakkyar Man Aung Pagoda. The dimension of the Pagoda is 240 feet and the height is about 114 feet.


Koethaung Pagoda

Koethaung Pagoda was built in 1553 A.D by the King Mintaikkha who was the son of the King Minbin, the donor of the great Shitthaung Pagoda. The word Koethaung means ninety-thousand and thus the temple is supposed to contain ninety-thousand Buddhas that is the pagoda of 90,000 Buddhas. Each of the three sides has terraces with a number of small pagodas built on each. The inner gallery under this structure has been rendered inaccessible now. At the center of the precincts, there is an octagonal pagoda. This massive piece of architecture reminds one of Barabodur of Indonesia.


Mrauk U Museum

Mrauk U museum is located near the palace site. It displays some old artefacts of Vesali, Launggret and Mrauk U periods. The bronze Buddha icons of Rakhine are equistic in design.Various inscribed stone inscriptions in Sanskrit, Rakhine and Arabic are also displayed Votive tablets, Krishna Vishnu, Bodhisattvas, dvarapala, stone htis, lintels coins, musical instruments, ceramicswares are also on display. Mrauk-U is an ancient city in the Rakhine State, which is situated in the western part of the Union of Myanmar.Mrauk-U is also a place where cultural heritages have flourished for many years.The Rakhine State is close to the Bay of Bengal and the coastal region is full of rocks and reefs and may be that is why so many stone-sculptures can be seen as ancient cultural crafts in the Rakhine region.
