 Yangon and Environs

Yangon, capital city, is the largest of Myanmar. Environment is evergreen and cool with lush tropical trees, shady parks and beautiful lakes. Yangon was founded by Konbaung dynasty King Alaungpaya on the site of a small village called Dagon when he conquered Lower Myanmar in 1755. Yangon means "End of Strife" which was anglicized to Rangoon. Today Yangon covers 350 sq. km. and has a population of over 5 million.

 


SHWEDAGON PAGODA

Shwedagon Pagoda is the prominent landmark of Myanmar seen from miles around. Shwedagon derives not only from its special sanctity but also from its physical presence. Located on top of a hill 190 feet (58 metres) high, its great golden mass rises up a further 326 feet (99 metres). Shwedagon means the Pagoda of Golden Glory. One of the wonders of the world, the Shwedagon Pagoda have been built more than 2600 years ago, that is during the Buddha's lifetime where the four Buddhas's relics were enshrined.

SULE

The central stupa's name, Kyaik Athok, translates in the Mon language as 'the stupa where a sacred Hair Relic is enshrined. A Court Minister Maha Thrua built the Sule Pagoda in the year 235 Buddhist Era or about 2,200 years ago. Sule pagoda is centre heart of Yangon near the city hall and the Myanmar Hotel and Tourism Office. It stands 46m high and is surrounded by small shops. It's significance landmarks of Yangon.

 


BOTATAUNG PAGODA

Botataung Pagoda situated way downtown beside the Yangon River. The Botataung Pagoda was named after the thousand military leaders who escorted relics of the Buddha brought from India over two thousand years ago. The meaning of Bo is "leader" and tahtaung is "1000" . It was built almost in the same time as Sule Pagoda and Shwedagon Pagoda over, 2500 years ago. The name of the pagoda was originally Kyaik-de-att, which was a Mon name, or Sandaw Shin as it is enshrined with the sacred hair of the Lord Buddha.
 


CHAUKHTATGYI PAGODA

Chaukhtatgyi pagoda is one of the largest reclining Buddha image in Myanmar. The image is 72 meter long. The original image was built in 1907. The pagoda was demolished in 1959 and it was built to this structure in 1966.
 



 


KABA AYE PAGODA (World Peace Pagoda)

Kaba Aye pagoda was built in 1952 for the Sixth Buddhist Synod (1954-56). The 34m high stupa also measures 34m around its base. Maha Pasana Cave (Great Cave) is situated near the Kaba Aye pagoda.


 

 


National Museum

The National Museum is situated on Pyi Road, and it had five storeys of exhibits.
It displays the 8m-high Sihasana (Linon Throne), the Elephant Throne, the Royal Regalia, manuscripts, painting, etc.

 

 


BOGYOKE AUNG SAN MARKET (SCOTT MARKET)

Bogyoke Aung San Market (Scott Market) is located on the Bogyoke Aung san road and near Yangon downtown area. Bogyoke Aung San market is one of the best places for souvenir shopping, Myanmar handicrafts, jewellery, lacquer ware, paintings and modern items are readily available.
 


 


THANLYIN (SYRIAM)

Thanlyin, formely known as Syriam, is situated on the other side of Yangon River. Yangon - Thanlyin Bridge is one of the longest bridges in Myanmar. Once a trading port occupied by the Portuguese in early 17th century, Thanlyin and its surroundings offer many attractions. The old buildings still stand in evidence of the days of Portuguese occupation. Kyaik - Khauk Pagoda and Kyauktan Pagoda in the creek are worth visiting.

 



BAGO(PEGU)

Bago is one of tourist interesting site in Myanmar. Bago is located about 80 km from Yangon. The royal capital of Mon Kingdom in 15th century and known as Hanthawaddy.It is an excursion place on the way to the famous Kyaikhtiyo (Golden Rock) Pagoda. There are many places to visit the Shwemawdaw Pagoda, the huge Reclining Buddha of Shwethalyaung (measuring 55 m in length and 16 m in height), the four Giant Buddha images of Kyaipun Pagoda (30m high sitting Buddha), Kahlyani Thein (Sima) or Ordination Hall, Mahazedi Pagoda (Great Stupa) and Kanbawza Thadi palace of famous King Bayinnaung.


KYAIKHTIYO PAGODA (GOLDEN ROCK)

Kyaikhtiyo Pagoda (Golden Rock) is a major pilgrimage site for Myanmar Buddhists and tourists identical. It is in Kyaikhto Township in Mon State, about 160km by car from Yangon. Kyaikhtiyo Pagoda stands on a gold gilded boulder, precariously perched on the edge of the hill over 1100m above sea level. This pagoda was named Khyaik-ei-thi-yo, which in the Mon dialect means "pagoda borne on a hermit's head."There are many legend stories about the pagoda and the "nats" or "spirits". Kyaikhtiyo Pagoda Festival is annually open from November to May, until the rainy season sets in.


PYAY (PROME)

Pyay is located about 180 miles to the north on the Yangon on the eastern bank of the Ayeyarwady River on Yangon - Bagan road. Pyay is an important commercial center for trade between the Ayeyarwady Delta,central, upper Myanmar and the Rakhine state. A few kilometers north-east of the town is Thayekhittaya (Sir Ksetra), an archaeological site of the ancient Pyu capital (5th to 9th Century).Shwesandaw Pagoda, Hsehtakyi pagoda, Shwe Phone Pwint Museum, Bawbawgyi Pagoda, Bebegyi pagoda, Payagyi and Payama Stupas are other places of interest in and around Pyay. Ahkauktaung is very exciting place for all visitors. Recently discovered ancient site meaning "custom post" was discovering by the west bank of Ayeyarwady River. Famous for its numerous Bhddha statues of different size and posture curved on the rocky bank of the river. You can visit one-day boat trip from Paya.
